1:1-8

Mark 1:1–8 opens the Gospel by declaring its purpose: to announce “the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The passage introduces John the Baptist, who fulfills Old Testament prophecy by preparing the way for the Lord. John calls people to repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and many come to him in the wilderness. His simple lifestyle emphasizes his prophetic role. John makes clear that he is not the Messiah; instead, he points to one greater who is coming, who will baptize not with water but with the Holy Spirit.

Think About It:

1) What about John’s person (appearance or characteristics) stand out most to you? What does this reveal about him?

2) What has been your experience with ‘legalism’ within the church?

3) How have you experienced the Holy Spirit in your life? How would you like to grow that relationship?
