Advent Candle Lighting

The Prophecy: Isaiah 9:2, 6

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Meditation: Isaiah looks beyond his own time of pain and sorrow to a new day of truth and light, the age of Jesus Christ. Isaiah has great expectations; his message is one of joy and anticipation. Like him, we should prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ in anticipation of the great joy He will bring to fill our homes and churches as we make plans for the celebration of His birth.

Today we light the candle of hope. The people of Israel hoped in God’s promises and were not disappointed. Again and again God delivered Israel from its enemies. We, too, have the same experience of salvation. That is why we believe in God’s promise to send Jesus to us once again to judge the world and establish His kingdom forever upon the earth.

Hope is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at the light of this candle, we celebrate the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

Carol: “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”

Come, thou long expected Jesus,

born to set thy people free;

from our fears and sins release us,

let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,

hope of all the earth thou art;

dear desire of every nation,

joy of every longing heart..

Prayer (In Unison):

Almighty God, we thank you for the promise of a Savior so long ago. Prepare our hearts to accept Him anew in the Spirit of love and peace which He brought into the world. Give us a true meaning of Christmas and renew our spirits as we enter this Holy season; through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen!
